Information for Students

The Australian Stock Horse is a living Australian Icon

The contribution of Australia's own breed of horse to our country's history and development is a very interesting topic of study for students of all ages. From the arrival of the first horses in this country with the First Fleet in 1788, the Australian Stock Horse has developed and evolved through selective breeding in response to the demands of the Australian environment. This hardy, intelligent and handsome breed is known for its quiet temperament and athletic ability. The Australian Stock Horse played an important part in the early development and expansion of Australia, carrying explorers, stockmen, settlers, bushrangers, troopers and the military.

The Australian Stock Horse continues to play an important part in Australia's $6 billion equine industry (Source: RIRDIC). The Australian Stock Horse Society was formed in 1971 to preserve and promote the heritage of the Australian Stock Horse. The National Headquarters is based in Scone, NSW, known as the Horse Capital of Australia.
